What happens at your flu jab

Flu can make you seriously ill, especially if you are older or have a long-term condition. The vaccine is the best protection.

  1. Quick health checkWe ask a few questions to make sure the vaccine is suitable for you.
  2. One quick injectionThe vaccine is given in your upper arm and takes a moment.
  3. A short waitWe ask you to wait briefly afterwards, just to make sure you feel well.
  4. Protection for winterProtection builds over about two weeks and lasts through the flu season.

Before your appointment

  • Wear a top that lets us reach your upper arm
  • Tell us about any allergies, including to eggs
  • Let us know if you feel unwell on the day

Afterwards

  • A sore arm for a day or two is common
  • You may feel tired or achy briefly
  • Contact us or NHS 111 if you feel very unwell

Questions before you book?

Here are the things people ask us most. Anything else, just contact the pharmacy or pop in and ask the team.

  • Who should have a flu vaccine?Anyone who wants to reduce their chance of flu. It is especially important if you are 65 or over, pregnant, or have a long-term condition.
  • Can I get it free on the NHS?Some people are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine. Ask us and we will check for you.
  • Will the vaccine give me flu?No. The injected vaccine cannot give you flu, although some people feel achy for a day or two.
  • How long does the appointment take?Usually less than 15 minutes, including a short wait afterwards.
  • When should I have it?Ideally in the autumn, before flu starts spreading, but it is still worth having later in the winter.
